Winter energy savings top $100,000 since 2011

In its third year, the University’s Winter Holiday Energy Savings Initiative has saved more than $100,000 since it was implemented in 2011.

“Our most recent break resulted in $34,340 of savings from Dec. 24, 2014, through Jan. 1, 2015,” said Tony Schallert, energy manager in the Department of Facilities Management.

Thanks to the efforts of students, faculty and staff, along with the facilities operations unit in the Department of Facilities Management, specific thermostats were lowered to approximately 65 degrees F during this time. Exterior doors and windows also were secured, and nonessential lighting and electronics were turned off to further maximize savings.

“This year’s savings are a great example of what can be done when the campus works together, and the opportunity exists year-round,” added Schallert. Some of the most effective energy-efficient practices include:

  • Turning off and unplugging office equipment and appliances that are not vital or in use
  • Closing all exterior windows and doors
  • Turning off lights in rooms that are not in use
  • Shutting off space heaters
  • Closing fume hood sashes in labs when they are not actively working
