Campus beautification initiative relaunches

At the close of last month’s Earth Month celebrations, the Adopt-A-Spot program relaunched. The reestablishment of the program was successful due to efforts of members of the Kappa Kappa Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., who initiated identification of a location to adopt and an application for funding from the Charlotte Green Initiative with assistance from the Sustainability Office.

Adopt-A-Spot, as the name suggests, offers campus groups an opportunity to adopt a designated area on campus to clean and maintain.

With a newly established focus on campus beautification, four other student clubs and organizations – Charlotte Volleyball, Earth Club, Honors Program, and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. – have joined in on the program relaunch.

Signage for each group’s adopted area is visible in locations near SoVi Dining, Memorial Hall, Belk Hall, and Cone Deck 2.

“Student organizations were quick to embrace this new opportunity and we immediately saw an increase of requests to adopt areas throughout campus,” said Tyler Sytsma, University sustainability coordinator. “With end of semester demands, we are fortunate the Charlotte Green Initiative approved funding for five additional locations that will be given out to applicants this summer.”

Sytsma credits community service awareness as the catalyst behind the program’s success. He adds, “The high demand was an opportunity for organizations to give back to the University and to provide a community service initiative seen by over 28,000 students, who will, hopefully, join in on the effort.”

Student organizations with an interest to adopt one of the five new locations approved for funding should email Sytsma at tsytsma@uncc.edu to receive a detailed explanation of the process.
