Project Description:
The Kennedy building was the first on the UNC Charlotte campus, built in 1960 with primarily
cast-in-place reinforced concrete construction. The exterior stair on the South side, original to the
building, consists of precast treads supported by cast-in-place beams and columns, with an
attached grand entryway elevated slab and precast arched canopy system overhead. An
assessment of the condition of the stairs revealed severe deterioration of the treads and
supporting structural elements as well as water intrusion and drainage issues. This project will
replace the stairs in their entirety, restore the entryway and arches to extend their longevity, and
address drainage-related issues underneath.
